Not Exactly Run of the Mill

My inbox (e and snail) is full of all kinds of stuff--the latest products ... new diet books ... you name it. It never fails--people are always trying to figure out creative ways to get the general public off its collective duff. Case in point: the Aquabilt underwater treadmill. For a mere $1,299 (and FREE SHIPPING!), proud pool-owners can purchase this revolutionary gadget for water runners. Now--I did water-running when I was pregnant with my son, after I decided that, at 7 months in, I was done with the treadmill and trail. But I didn't have a treadmill to do it on--I simply ran the length of the pool, treading water in the deep end. It's a great work out ... but ... do you NEED to blow big bucks for a treadmill? I think not.

Also in the file right now is the treadmill desk. Yes, it's a way to work (as in, at a job) while you work out. Or the other way around. Now, I love multitasking, and preach getting the most activity you can in your day. And we have talked about somehow setting up my old treadmill in an empty cube here, so we could take walking breaks. But ... again ... there are better things I can do with $4,000. Like, um, pay my mortgage for three months.

What do you guys think of these gadgets? Am I the only one who doesn't get it?

I think you need to ask yourself what is going to motivate you and what you will honestly use. I don't like running outside. I live in farm country and the miles and miles of corn is not exciting to me. I also have very large breasts and I don't like people seeing the bouncy, bouncy (one gal asked me in high school if they hit me in the face when I run). Also, one of my favorite guilty pleasures is watching movies, but I alwasys feel so unproductive doing it. So, with all of that knowledge of myself, I purchased a tread mill. I knew that if it did not have all sorts of neat stuff on it I would not use it. So, my treadmill has a built in tv and I get to watch movies while I run. I get to watch whatever movie I want while running and not be afraid the kids are snooping around the corner (I like war movies). I also had the goal of increasing my fitness level by monitering my heart rate so my tread mill came with a wireless heart rate monitor. I have a recumbant bike that I use when I want to read a book or do some serious arm workouts (it is a rehabilitation one that has the arms which you can use independantly if you would like). So, I agree with you that a lot of things are not necessary to waste money on and you have to be careful. We need to make sure that we are getting something that will improve our workouts, not just a new gadget.

2 years ago I thought I've achieved FFG. I joined Weight Watchers 2 years before that, followed the program on my own, wrote everything I ate, discovered running and later swimming, learned how to make the most of 15-min workout if that's all the time I had. 2007, I couldn't work out for 2 months after surgery, had to ease into it and rebuild lost endurance, etc. Gained 5 lbs. Last year I got an extremely "uncomfortable" job, physically and mentally exhausting to say the least, but something I could really grow from if it doesn't annihilate me. Stopped working out regularly, started eating for every reason. Gained 15 lbs. Through every gain, I thought I could get back into it easily, that it was just a matter of when.

When, when, when? I fell prey to infomercials and bought 2 promising workout DVD sets. Superfit in 90 days, they claim. They really appealed to my recently discovered "athletic" self. It's nearly 90 days since I bought the first set and I've only done 7 workouts. They don't make me feel as good as running, I figured. So 2 weeks ago, I got cute running outfits, enough for 4 runs a week, so no excuses, just lace up and go. In fact I'm geared up to run as I write this, but something is keeping me away from that thing, possibly the only thing, that could possibly make me feel better. It's a struggle.

Which is a really long-winded way of saying, when you're trying to look for answers to why can't I "just do it"?, the tendency is to look for solutions to all the complicated excuses. Maybe what I really need is a good therapist. (I think you addressed this in Secret #7.) But maybe I needed to make bad workout investments to realize that.
